Rowan Claughton is a contestant on the 14th series of The Great British Bake Off on Channel 4. An English Literature student from West Yorkshire, Rowan lives by the motto “go big, or go home”, a philosophy he applies to his baking endeavours. His earliest baking memories revolve around scones, pork pies, shortbread, and jam tarts, which he considers Northern delicacies.
Rowan is also a keen host, applying his creative eye to his cooking – he aims for clean lines and interesting decoration in his finished bakes. Just like his much-admired, knock-out cocktail-making skills, Rowan expresses his grand, opulent side in his bakes, wowing his university friends with his creations. He made his own 21st birthday cake – a three-tier, 12-layer extravaganza.

The 21-year-old announced his participation in GBBO on Instagram, writing: “I’m on The Great British Bake Off! After months of lying to my friends and family, I can finally share this incredible new chapter with you all.
“Filming for #GBBO was the most rewarding and exhilarating experience of my life so far, and I even managed to graduate from University whilst baking up a storm in that pearly white tent.
“Bake Off has also brought me life-long friends, who became a family to me as we flustered about on’t tele hoping to present something worthy to the judges.
“And to Alison and Noel, you laughed with us, held our hands and made our time in the tent that bit more magical. You’re the best.”
Aged 21, Rowan is the youngest baker in the 2023 series of The Great British Bake Off.
He joked: “Being the youngest baker in the tent this year, I have the ability to flaunt my youth and let everyone know that I was only eight when the first episode of Bake Off aired. After watching each series without fail, I knew that one of my life goals would be to bake in that tent.
“Getting the call to say I had achieved that dream, I did the only thing appropriate: I slid to the floor, screamed down the phone and ran to the shops for a bottle of prosecco, all before getting back to join the group wash-up in my uni house. Classy.”
