Richard Rose III (born Richard Donald Rose, III) was a 37-year-old Port Clinton war vet. He served in the United States Army for 9 years serving two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
On April 28, 2020, Richard Rose III posted on Facebook: “Let make this clear. I’m not buying a f-king mask. I’ve made it this far by buying into that damn hype.”
On June 13, he checked into the Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island in Ohio, writing “Round 2.” He then shared a photo of a large crowd of people in and around a pool. He wrote: “It’s not that packed lol.” On June 15, another Facebook post showed he was at the S&M Bar.
On July 1, Rose wrote: “I’ve been very sick the past few days. Symptoms of Covid-19. This morning I finally got swabbed. I should know soon what the results are. I just want to feel good again!”
One Facebook friend, Sara Elaine Massello, asked him, “Weren’t you at the Bay a week ago?” Rose replied, “A few weeks ago yes.” He added: “I seriously think that’s where I contracted if I test positive.”
On July 1, Rose confirmed he tested positive for the coronavirus. He wrote on Facebook: “Well. I’m officially under quarantine for the next 14 days. I just tested positive for COVID-19. Sucks because I had just started a new job!”
On July 2, he wrote: “This covid sh-t sucks! I’m so out of breath just sitting here.” According to Richard Rose III’s obituary on the Crosser Funeral Home website, he died on July 4.
