Rhys Mathewson is an award-winning comedian, writer, actor, and reporter. He is known for his work in 7 Days of Sport, The Jono Project, Have you Been Paying Attention? and Gary of the Pacific. He currently serves as a roving reporter on Seven Sharp. In 2022, he is set to appear as a contestant in the ninth series of New Zealand’s reality dancing competition show, Dancing With The Stars.
Mathewson is a remarkable stand-up comedian, he started his career in the 2000s when he participated in Class Comedians aged 15. He was part of the 2006 NZ International Comedy Festival’s Class Comedians program. After leaving the stage, the Aotearoa native knew he wanted to pursue a career in comedy, he says, “as soon as I stepped off the stage for the first time I knew I was going to do this my entire life”.
In 2009, Mathewson won Best Newcomer for his first solo show at the NZ International Comedy Festival, The Best $18 You’ll Ever Spend. A year later, he won the Billy T Comedy Award, he became the youngest ever winner in the Award’s history aged 19. He was also nominated for the “Best Male Comedian” at the NZ Comedy Guild Awards. In 2016, he won the Fred Dagg Award for best show at the NZ International Comedy Festival. Mathewson has also performed in different parts of the world including in Chortle Fast Fringe at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and on television, in TV3’s Hounds.
