Julio Lugo (born Julio Cesar Lugo) was a Dominican professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Houston Astros (2000–2003), Tampa Bay Devil Rays (2003–2006), Los Angeles Dodgers (2006), Boston Red Sox (2007–2009), St. Louis Cardinals (2009), Baltimore Orioles (2010) and Atlanta Braves (2011). He was the shortstop for the Red Sox’s 2007 World Series championship team.
Born in the Dominican Republic, his mother, a teacher, moved to New York City where Lugo attended Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn. He attended Connors State College in Warner, Oklahoma.
He was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 43rd round of the 1994 MLB draft. Starting in Low-A ball in 1995, Lugo advanced through the minors and made his MLB debut for the Astros on April 15, 2000, at age 24.
In his 12 seasons (2000-2011) in Major League Baseball, Lugo hit .269/.333/.384 (87 OPS+) with 1,279 hits, 238 doubles, 34 triples, 80 home runs, 475 RBI, 688 runs, 198 stolen bases and 13.5 WAR. He batted .385 in the 2007 World Series sweep of the Colorado Rockies.
