R’Bonney Gabriel, also known as R’Bonney Nola, is an American beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe 2022. She was the winner of the Miss USA 2022 pageant and Miss Texas USA 2022 pageant. She is also a fashion designer and model.
R’Bonney Gabriel graduated from Lawrence E. Elkins High School in Missouri City in 2012. In 2018, she received a bachelor’s degree in fashion design with a minor in fibers at the University of North Texas.
For three months, she lived in New York City as an intern for fashion designer Nicole Miller.
Gabriel also worked as the lead sewing instructor for domestic violence survivors at a nonprofit design house, Magpies & Peacocks, at 908 Live Oak in East Downtown Houston. The business collects discarded fabrics and textiles and repairs, reworks and up-cycles them into new collections that are for sale in a front of house retail store that is open Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Houston native R’Bonney Gabriel was crowned the 71st Miss Universe pageant at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 14, 2023.
The model and fashion designer beat out Amanda Dudamel from Venezuela and Andreína Martínez from the Dominican Republic, who were also in the top three, for the coveted title. The 28-year-old fashion designer beat out 83 women from around the world for the coveted top spot.
During the final question and answer segment of the competition, the top three contenders were asked how they would work to demonstrate Miss Universe as an empowering and progressive organization if they won the title.
Gabriel answered that she would use her platform to be a “transformational leader” and emphasized how she uses fashion as a force for good by cutting down on pollution through using recycled materials when she makes her clothing.
“I teach sewing classes to women that have survived from human trafficking and domestic violence,” Gabriel said. “And I say that because it is so important to invest in others, invest in our community, and use your unique talent to make a difference. We all have something special and when we plant those seeds for other people in our life, we transform them and we use that as a vehicle for change.”
