Patrick Grant Biography – Patrick Grant Wiki

Patrick Grant is a Scottish fashion designer, entrepreneur and judge of BBC’s The Great British Sewing Bee. He is the director of Norton & Sons, E Tautz & Sons, Cookson & Clegg and Hammond & Co. at Debenhams.

Grant did a material science and engineering degree at Leeds University, with an Erasmus year at a French polytechnic. After 10 years in engineering, at 30, he enrolled at the Saïd Business School at Oxford University and mortgaged everything to buy Norton & Sons tailors in 2005.

Grant began his career in textiles at Norton & Sons on Savile Row in 2005 where he revived the 200-year-old tailoring house, taking it back to its founding traditions of exceptional hand tailoring using only the very finest natural cloths, sourced from fantastic British mills many of which he still works with today. In 2009 he relaunched British designer ready-to-wear brand E. Tautz for which he was awarded Menswear Designer of the Year at the 2010 British Fashion Awards. In 2015 he took over the 160-year-old clothing manufacturer Cookson & Clegg in Blackburn, Lancashire saving it from closure.

In 2016 Grant founded the fashion brand Community Clothing, which promises to use the “best natural materials in the very best factories right here in the UK”.

He also co-chairs a charity, Future Textiles, with the Prince’s Foundation, working with the Prince of Wales to send kids for introductions to sewing, pattern drafting and textiles at Dumfries House in Scotland, to understand where clothes come from and what they’re made from.

He holds degrees from Leeds and Oxford Universities, an Honorary Professorship at Glasgow Caledonian University’s School of Business and Society, a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts, an Honorary Doctorate from Heriot Watt University’s School of Textiles and Design and an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Central Lancashire.

Patrick Grant Sewing Bee

Scottish fashion designer Patrick Grant has been a judge on BBC’s reality television series The Great British Sewing Bee since 2013 when the show first aired.

“I decided to do The Great British Sewing Bee despite never having done TV before, but it’s been a load of fun, as well as encouraging people in Britain to start making clothes again,” he said in a past interview. “It has started a debate about the value of the clothes we own, and contributed to a shift in the industry – as well as boosting sales of sewing machines!”

He is the son of Susan and the late James. He grew up in Edinburgh where his “Mum and Dad, my little sister, Victoria, and I lived on the top floors, my granny on the ground floor.”

Grant looked up to his father.

“I looked up to my dad, an accountant who dressed fastidiously in tailor-made suits. I have some of his ties, which I knot in precisely the same way. And I still wear a barathea wool dinner suit of his, made in 1935. I wore it through university, and called it my “combat suit”, for rugby dinners where you knew things were going to get trashed. It can survive anything, and it has.”

His Musselburgh-born father died of covid in 2020. In April 2021, Grant shared a photo of his father’s reading chair on Instagram, writing: “A year ago my dad died of covid. This was his chair. It used to sit in his study, a nicotine tanned west-facing bookcase-lined room with an amazing swirly 1970s carpet.

“He’d smoke Dunhills and read, with our dogs at his feet, shafts of evening sun cutting the haze setting the mad carpet ablaze. I have lots of memories of my dad in a chair reading.

“This one is an Edwardian captains chair and it had seen much better days, its springs shot, its brown boucle shredded by various of our cats. By good fortune my neighbour @theoddchairco build chairs, and their craftsmen have worked their restorative magic.

“My dads chair has been given a new lease of life. Now I sit in it and read, and it brings his memory close. It is my favourite chair.”
