Nigel Harman is an English TV, film, and theatre actor, director and meditator. He is best known for his role in BBC’s Casualty as Max Cristie, EastEnders as Dennis Rickman, the son of Den Watts and Paula Rickman, and appeared in Downton Abbey.
Nigel’s acting career started when he was eight – working on multiple TV series, theatre shows, and the odd movie. Most recently joining BBC’s Casualty as Max Cristie, Holby ED’s new Clinical Lead. Nigel was also in EastEnders playing Dennis Rickman and appeared in Downton Abbey. Among many stage credits, Nigel has performed in Guys and Dolls in London’s West End and Shrek the Musical, which he then went on to direct for the UK tour. His film work includes roles in Blood Diamond, Telstar, and The Outsiders for ITV.
His role as Dennis Rickman won him multiple awards, including Most Popular Newcomer at the National Television Awards. He also has an Olivier for his role in Shrek. When he’s not on our screens, Nigel enjoys teaching meditation – practicing and sharing mindfulness guidance.
Nigel began his meditation journey after a friend and mentor gifted him a copy of “A Path with Heart” by Jack Kornfield. Following the completion of The Power of Awareness course, he started training as a meditation teacher with Jack Kornfield (big fan!) and the magnetic Tara Brach. He launched, The Meditating Actor, a company offering meditation services.

Nigel was the thirteenth celebrity contestant confirmed for Strictly Come Dancing 2023. The news was revealed on Thursday 10 August on ITV’s Lorraine.
Nigel said: “I’m amazed, excited, and terrified to be doing Strictly. As an armchair fan of the show, I have watched in awe as people have twirled and gyrated across the screen. And now it’s my turn…..gulp!”
On joining the Strictly cast this year, Harman told Christine Lampard on the ITV chat show Lorraine: “As the days have crept up to this moment I’ve been going what have I done? I’m excited to be out and proud now. I’ve just stepped onto a rollercoaster. I think I’m realising as time goes on I think I’m a better dancer than my body is telling me. We did a taster session with the pros and I was doing the cha cha cha. I looked up and it was like nothing I’d ever seen before, and not in a good way.”
Nigel has been taking advice from his Casualty co-star Charles Venn, who appeared on Strictly in 2018. He said:
“Charles took me aside and went serious and said you’ve got to do cardio, cardio at the gym, cardio cardio. He’s really fit so I’m like oh god. And he said just be yourself.”
Nigel joined Amanda Abbington, Angela Rippon, Layton Williams, Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Eddie Kadi, Angela Scanlon, Zara McDermott, Adam Thomas, Nikita Kanda, Ellie Leach, Jody Cundy and Bobby Brazier in the line-up for series 21 of Strictly Come Dancing.
