Nathan Chester is a versatile singer, born in Chicago and raised in Orlando, Florida. He is a contestant on the 25th season of The Voice.

At the age of 14, he auditioned for The Voice but failed to turn a chair. In an Instagram post, Nathan recalls returning home “seriously motivated … I found myself working harder and being more excited to explore live performance and singing,” he writes.

He has considerable experience as a cover singer and in musical theater.

Currently, he is co-founder of EM&N Productions with his musical and romantic partner Emily Viancourt. EM&N Productions now has a new duo show called “Cruise Control,” promising to bring audiences “some of the best soul and Motown music ever written.”

His passion for music stems back to his days performing with the show choir at Oak Park and River Forest High School in the Chicago suburbs.

He undertook his studies at Waldorf University and musical theater and dance at the University of Central Missouri.

He has musical theater experience including roles in productions of “Rock of Ages,” “9 to 5,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “Hairspray.”

In 2019, he was part of a new musical called “Starry” that played at Feinstein’s 54 Below in New York. The play was based on letters between Vincent Van Gogh and his brother, Theo. The musical resulted in a cast album released in November 2020.

He was performing as Joe Viba at the time, landed the role of Theo, and is featured on nine of the album’s tracks. He also released music under that name. Three of his singles are still available.

27-year-old Chester is a contestant on the 25th season of The Voice alongside Karen Waldrup, Josh Sanders and Maddi Jane. He took part in the blind auditions singing a rendition of Al Green’s soul-pop classic “Take Me to the River.”

His performance elicited chair turns from Legend and Dan + Shay. “I’m always waiting for someone to inspire me, excite me, and Nathan, when I heard you singing, I turned very quickly, because I was like, this man’s got it!” Legend said about the performance.

Chance the Rapper admitted he didn’t turn around after he assumed that Chester’s vocals would be a perfect fit for Team Legend. Chester also noted that he sings on cruise ships and, not for nothing, he loves cheesecake.

Coach Reba McEntire said that made him a “man after my own heart” — Legend put on the full-court press after emerging so far with only one artist on his team. “I’ve been very selective. I’m always just waiting for somebody to inspire me, excite me and Nathan, when I heard you singing, I turned very quickly because I was like, ‘This man’s got it!’” Legend said.

After Dan + Shay jokingly noted that “there’s a reason John’s only got one guy on his team,” they also laid it on thick in praising Chester’s vocals, with Shay Mooney adding, “Also, I love cruise ships and I love cheesecake a lot!”

Legend had the closer, though. “My wife makes a mean cheesecake,” “And you can just come to the house and have cheesecake. Homemade cheesecake,” Legend piled on, eliciting groans of “unbelievable” from his fellow panelists.

In the end, the singer’s cheesy pitch did the trick and Chester picked Team Legend.
