Melissa Wildgen Rootes Biography
Melissa Wildgen Rootes is the wife of former Texans President Jamey Rootes, who served as the Houston Texans’ team president from their inaugural season in 2002 through his 2021 retirement. A Stow, Ohio native, Melissa gratuated from Stow-Munroe Falls High School and went on to study at The Ohio State University. She currently lives in Houston, Texas, with her two children, Chris and Caroline.
Jamey Rootes, a Clemson alumnus, started his sports executive career as president and general manager of MLS’ Columbus Crew before joining the Texans. During Rootes’ tenure, the Texans earned many distinctions, including numerous “Crystal Awards” and two American Business Awards for marketing excellence. Following the 2019 NFL season, the Texans extended their sellout game streak to 185 consecutive home games – a Houston NFL record. He also served as CEO of MLS’ Houston Dynamo and NWSL’s Houston Dash for a short time in 2021.
Jamey died on Sunday, August, 20, 2022 at the age of 56 “after a battle with mental health issues.” His wife, Melissa, confirmed the news on Facebook, writing: “Jamey was best known for his devotion to his family and friends but was also former President of the Houston Texans, retiring in 2021.
“Jamey was a dedicated Houstonian who loved his city and touched so many lives through his professional, academic, and philanthropic work. Our family is requesting privacy and will not be responding to media inquiries. The details of a celebration of Jamey’s life will be announced at a later date.”
