Jamey Rootes was an American sports executive and former president of the Houston Texans. A member of the Texans organization for 20 years, Rootes was hired as team president by late owner Bob McNair in 2002, the year the Texans played their first NFL game. He resigned from the position in February 2021, and was succeeded by current president Greg Grissom in March.

His main objectives centered around the business operations of the organization. During Rootes’ tenure, the Texans recorded 185 consecutive sellouts and earned a plethora of marketing awards.

Following his Texans tenure, Rootes went on to serve as CEO of MLS team Houston Dynamo and NWSL team Houston Dash before stepping down in July after 18 days in the role.

Prior to joining Houston, the Clemson alum spent time as the president and general manager of Major League Soccer team Columbus Crew from 1995 to 1999. Rootes was hired on July 7, 1995. For four seasons, he held the position of General Manager and later President and General Manager of the team, helping guide the Black & Gold through their first seasons in Major League Soccer as charter member number 1. He was with the Club in the 1999 season as the team opened Historic Crew Stadium, helping forever alter the trajectory of Major League Soccer and the history of the Crew.

Rootes’ wife, Melissa Wildgen Rootes, shared the sad news in a Facebook post confirming her husband passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2022 in Houston, Texas, following a “battle with mental health issues.”

Melissa posted the following about her late husband on Facebook: “Our family is heartbroken to confirm that after a battle with mental health issues, Jamey Rootes passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2022 in Houston, Texas. Jamey was best known for his devotion to his family and friends but was also former President of the Houston Texans, retiring in 2021.

“Jamey was a dedicated Houstonian who loved his city and touched so many lives through his professional, academic, and philanthropic work. Our family is requesting privacy and will not be responding to media inquiries. The details of a celebration of Jamey’s life will be announced at a later date.
