Matthew Shepard full name Matthew Wayne Shepard, was an American University of Wyoming student who was beaten, tortured, and left to die on October 6, 1998 near Laramie.
Matthew attended Crest Hill Elementary School, Dean Morgan Junior High School, and Natrona County High School for his freshman through junior years. He then went to American School in Switzerland (TASIS) and graduated in May 1995. He then attended Catawba College in North Carolina and Casper College in Wyoming. At University of Wyoming, he majored in political science and with a minor in languages.
Shepard met Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson at the Fireside Lounge in Laramie on October 6, 1998. McKinney and Henderson gave Shepard a ride home and went on drive the car to a remote, rural area. They robbed, pistol-whipped, and tortured Shepard, tied him to a fence, and left him to die. McKinney and Henderson returned to Laramie where McKinney picked a fight with Emiliano Morales and Jeremy Herrara. Police officer Flint Waters arrived at the scene of the fight, arrested Henderson, searched McKinney’s truck and found a blood-smeared gun and Shepard’s shoes and credit card.
Shepard was discovered by Aaron Kreifels, a cyclist. He was taken to Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie before being moved to the more advanced trauma ward at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. He was pronounced dead on October 12, 1998.
Shepard will be interred at Washington National Cathedral on Friday, October 26, 2018 at the request of the Shepard family.
