Martin Hughes Biography – Martin Hughes Wiki
Martin Hughes is a furniture designer maker from Shrewsbury, North Shropshire specializing in bespoke furniture. He appears on the second series of BBC1’s Make it at Market.
His work is based on simplicity of form, shapes that speak for themselves, and beautiful yet functional detail. His design influences are largely 20th century, including Art Deco and particularly Scandinavian Mid Century.
His journey to becoming a furniture maker began in 2011 after a life-changing work accident left him hospitalized for 4 months and in a wheelchair for over a year afterward.
It was during his rehabilitation that he realized he needed a focus, something other than the challenge of learning to walk again. This is when he started to explore his love of creating along with his love of wood, one of nature’s most beautiful and versatile resources.
Since then, he has gone from being a largely self-taught hobbyist to a professionally trained craftsman, having studied at one of Britain’s most respected furniture schools, Williams & Cleal, in Somerset.
