Malusi Gigaba Biography

Malusi Gigaba full name Knowledge Malusi Nkanyezi Gigaba, is the former Minister of Home Affairs of The Republic of South Africa from 27 February 2018 until his resignation on 13 November 2018. He was born on 30 August 1971 in Eshowe, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

During his days in high school, Malusi Gigaba became involved in various student and youth organisations such as Congress of South African Students (COSAS), the South African Youth Congress (SAYCO), the South African Student Congress (SASCO) and Young Christian Students (YCS). Some of these organisations such as COSAS and SASCO were aligned to the banned African National Congress (ANC). It was his involvement in these organisations that laid the foundation for his activities in the ANC Youth League.

Malusi Gigaba joined the African National Congress (ANC), the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the ANCYL in 1990 and he was one of the founding members of the Education Students Society at the University of Durban-Westville in 1992, he was Chaiperson of SASCO at UDW in 1993.

Malusi Gigaba worked as an Office-Assistant at the Public Affairs Department, University of Durban-Westville in 1993 and was the Chairperson of the ANCYL, Southern KwaZulu-Natal and later Provincial Secretary in 1994.

He was Provincial Secretary of ANCYL and ex-officio of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of the ANC during the period 1994 to 1996.

He was a convenor of the Provincial Education Forum and a President of the ANCYL during the period 1994 to 2004 and a member of the ANC’s National Deployment Committee and also a Chairperson of the ANCYL’s Political Committee and National Economic Development Commission (NEDC).

He became a member of Parliament for the ANC in 1999 and during that period he also served as a member of the Trade and Industry Portfolio Committee; Joint Monitoring Committee on the Quality of Life and Status of Children, Youth and Disabled Persons; and as member of the Portfolio Committee on Agriculture and Land Affairs (Alternate member). He worked full-time as a consultant for MACSTEEL Company 1997.

Prior to the appointment as Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr Gigaba served as the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs of the Republic of South Africa between 11 May 2009 and 30 October 2010. He was the Minister of Public Enterprises of the Republic of South Africa from 1 November 2010 till 25 May 2014.

He served as the Minister of Home Affairs of the Republic of South Africa from 26 May 2014 until 30 March 2017.

For his primary school education he attended Mathonsi Primary School in Mandeni. He Matriculated at Vryheid State High School in 1988. He holds a Bachelor of Pedagogics in Education from University of Durban-Westville (UDW) during the period 1989 and 1990 and a Master of Arts Degree in Social Policy from UDW during the period 1992 to 1994.
