Mae Martin is a British-Canadian comedian, actress, writer, and producer. She has been performing comedy since she was aged 13. She trained in improvisation and sketch comedy at the Toronto outpost of the internationally acclaimed comedy institution, The Second City. Notable alumni of the institution include Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Steve Carrell and Mike Myers.
She received her first Canadian Comedy Award nomination aged 15, and has been nominated twice since. At 16 she made her Canadian television debut on The Comedy Network’s Cream of Comedy, and was the youngest ever nominee for the Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award. On Canadian Television Mae has also performed as part of Just For Laughs Festival and The Halifax Comedy Festival both for CBC, and on Video On Trial (Much Music). She has also been a guest on CBC Radio’s Q. She won a Canadian Screen Award for her writing on Canada’s CBC hit all-female comedy series Baroness Von Sketch Show, according to Mae Martin’s biography on her official website.
She moved to the UK in 2011. She was awarded Best international Performer at the Brighton Fringe and has been a finalist in The Hackney New Act of the Year Awards, The Musical Comedy Awards and the Amused Moose Laughter Awards.
On British television, Martin has performed on the BBC3’s showcase for new comedy talent Live At the BBC and had her first sitcom roles in Nick Helm’s Uncle (BBC3) and Outsiders, a comedy blap for Channel 4.
Martin has written for BBC Radio 4, Newsjack, News Quiz and The Now Show as well as Endemol and Beyond’s YouTube sketch series Sketch My Life. Mae regularly hosts her own stand-up nights in venues across London, most notably Mae Martin and Friends at Soho Theatre with line-ups including Aisling Bea, Sara Pascoe and James Acaster. Mae has previously supported Nina Conti on her UK tour.
