Lilo Tsai is a contestant on Season 9 of MasterChef Junior.
The Michigan native, 9, is one of the 12 junior chefs on the ninth season of MasterChef Junior. Lilo has been learning how to cook since she was 5 years old.
She is among the crew of 12 young chefs competing for a sizable prize and the coveted title of ‘MasterChef Junior.’ They are Alfred Eggermont, Asher Niles, Bryson McGlynn, Kristell Jean, Lydia Ledon, Michael Seegobin, Miles Platt, and Remy Powell, of Hollywood, Florida.

Tsai is confident about her cooking skills, explaining that her experience in the show helped her overcome her worries:
“I was always worried I was too young and people would question: ‘Is she too young?’ But no. After ‘MasterChef Junior,’ I don’t think anyone would question because I have proof. I’m one of the best chefs.”
One thing Lilo loved most about being on the show was meeting the Ramsays, she said.
“Gordon Ramsay was supportive, and kind, and Tilly was my favorite because both of our dads are chefs and she’s always making fun of her dad and I love making fun of mine,” she joked.
Food Dream: To open a restaurant. She says she always loved cooking and helping out in the restaurant. Her dream is to someday open a fusion restaurant featuring Japanese and American cuisines.

Cooking has always been a passion for Lilo as she grew up helping her father, Paul Tsai, with their Ann Arbor businesses, Godaiko Japanese Restaurant, and an Asian market called Tsai Grocery.
The two businesses have been bringing Asian dishes to the city for decades now, Paul said.
Lilo has been learning how to cook since she was 5 years old, she said, which is around the same time her father began discovering his own culinary passion.
“We were absolutely stunned (when Lilo made it on ‘MasterChef Junior’),” he said. “From my perspective, it’s just so gratifying. I hope one day she is able to walk in my footsteps.”

Tsai’s family owns a Godiako Japanese restaurant in Ann Arbor and an Asian market called Tsai Grocery.
In an interview with Detroit Free Press, Tsai opened up about being part of the family business: “We are a sushi restaurant, so we make a lot of sushi on the weekend. I make hundreds of California rolls and orders.”
