Daniel Toroitich arap Moi died on 4 February 2020 at age 95 while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital in Nairobi. His death was announced Tuesday by President Uhuru Kenyatta in a presidential proclamation.
President Kenyatta said in the Proclamation, “It is with profound sadness and sorrow that I announce the passing of a Great African Statesman, H.E Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, the second president of the Republic of Kenya. The former president passed on at the Nairobi Hospital on the early morning of 4th February 2020, in the presence of his family.”
Moi took over from the founding president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta in 1978 following his death on August 22, 1978. He ruled Kenya for 24 years from 1978 to 2002, when he was succeeded by Mwai Kibaki.
