Martha Koome Biography – Martha Koome Wiki

Martha Koome is the Chief Justice nominee. She served as judge Court of Appeal Judge in Kenya. On April 27, 2021, Lady Justice Martha was nominated as Kenya’s third Chief Justice by the Judicial Service Commission. She is the first woman to be nominated as Chief Justice in Kenya. She is experienced and has served in legal practice for more than three decades.

Lady Justice Koome started her legal career in private practice in 1988, where she successfully ran a successful female-led law firm. Koome was elected as a council member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) between 1993 to 1996. In January 2012, Lady Justice Koome was appointed Judge of the Court of Appeal of Kenya. Prior to the appointment to the Court of Appeal, Lady Justice Koome served as Puine Judge for almost a decade and practiced law for 15 years.

Koome is well known for defending Human and Gender Rights. Lady Justice Koome was one of the lawyers who actively participated in the clamour for the repeal of section 2A of the Constitution and for the Independence of the judiciary. Koome is an acclaimed expert in family law and she takes a keen interest in children which earned her recognition by the United Nations. Lady Justice Koome was named the UN person of the year run-up in 2020.
Koome was appointed by the African Union meeting of heads of states as a Commissioner to the African Committee on the Rights and welfare of children, in 1995.

During her time at the Law Society of Kenya(LSK), Koome took a leading role in constitutional and legal reforms and was part of the constitutional review process as a delegate at the Bomas of Kenya where she partially chaired the thematic area on the Bill of Rights. Justice Koome has also served as the inaugural treasurer in the East Africa Law Society between 1994 to 1996. Lady Justice Koome has also served as Chairperson of FIDA one of the leading human rights organizations in the country.

Lady Justice Koome was born and raised in Meru county, Kenya. Speaking of her background, Koome said; “I grew up in rural areas in Meru in a village so I am a villager to the truest sense. My parents were peasant farmers and we were 18 children from two mothers. So, for all of us especially girls, it was a struggle to overcome the odds, but by grace of God, I was able to go to school and graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1986 with a Bachelor’s degree in Law, proceeded to the Kenya School of law and attained a Postgraduate diploma in law in 1987 being admitted to the Bar as an advocate the same year.”

Martha Koome Education

She attended the University of Nairobi where she earned her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 1986. She then attained a Postgraduate diploma in law in 1987. Koome also holds a Master of Laws (LL.M) in Public International Law from the University of London.
