Lalela Mswane is a South African model, dancer, and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss South Africa 2021. She was the first runner-up at the Matric Experience 2015 pageant. She holds a Bachelor of Law qualification from the University of Pretoria. She is also the founder of the Lalela Mswane Foundation.
She was crowned Miss South Africa 2021 on Saturday, 16 October 2021 at Grand Arena, GrandWest in Cape Town. In a Q&A with the Miss SA Organisation, the 24-year-old talked about the reason she entered Miss South Africa. She said: “I entered Miss South Africa 2021 in pursuit of a childhood dream. I deserve to win this title because I believe that my advocacy against the abatement of unemployment in our nation is one which requires dire attention and having the full support of the Miss South Africa Organisation would provide greater impact in the quest for meaningful and long-lasting solutions. I possess the compassion, tenacity, leadership and people skills which render me a worthy title holder. With a willing heart, an open mind and an eagerness to learn and grow, it would be an absolute honour to reign as Miss South Africa 2021.”
Lalela Mswane, who hails from KwaSokhulu, Richards Bay, KwaZuluNatal, is proud of her South African culture. On Heritage Day 2021 in South Africa, she posted a photo of herself dressed in South African traditional attire. She wrote: “Happy Heritage Day South Africa. Today, we celebrate and recognise the cultural wealth of our country, a truly vibrant, rich and culturally diverse nation we are! I hope it’s been a beautiful one for everyone.”
In a Q&A with the Miss SA Organisation, Lalela said: “Our country is extremely rich in diversity, heritage, culture and history. We boast a beautiful nation abundant in picturesque scenery but my favourite thing about South Africa is our people and their steadfast spirit in the face of any adversity. We also never fail to make humour the centre of any situation, good or bad, I love that!”

Lalela Mswane’s parents are the late Muntu Mswane and Hleliselwe Mthiyane-Mswane. Her father, Muntu Mswane, passed away in 2010 after a short illness. Her mother, Hleliselwe, is a homemaker having previously worked as an accounts clerk. Mswane describes her mother as her greatest role model. She said: “My mother is my greatest role model. She is the greatest giver of love, patience, kindness, affection and support. She never fails to extend grace even when she experiences injustice. With exceptional resilience, strength and profound wisdom, if I could be only half the woman she is, I would truly be one great woman.”

She is the daughter of former diplomat and minister, the late Muntu Mswane. Muntu died on 27 January 2010 after a short illness. He passed away in Pretoria where he was receiving treatment. At the time of his death, he was Swaziland’s High Commissioner to South Africa. He previously served as minister in at least three different portfolios, namely the then Ministries of Commerce, Health and Industry as well as the then Public Service and Information.
The news of his passing was confirmed by the then Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Clifford Mamba. Mamba said in a statement at the time: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Swaziland wishes to announce with deep regret that His Excellency Muntu Mswane, His Majesty’s High Commissioner to the Republic of South Africa resident in Pretoria has passed away after a short illness.”
