Kirk Haworth is chef and co-founder of Plates, a plant-based fine-dining restaurant in London. He appeared on the Great British Menu in 2021 and 2024. Originally from Blackburn, Kirk is the first ever plant-based chef to have taken part in the competition.

Kirk learnt the ropes working as an apprentice at the 1 Michelin star restaurant in Northcote Manor alongside his father Nigel Haworth, winner of BBC’s Great British Menu and contributor to Saturday Kitchen.

After winning the North West Young Chef of the Year award at the age of 17, Kirk Haworth went on to work under the world’s top chefs at The French Laundry, Restaurant Sat Bains, The Square and The Quay, perfecting his craft in Michelin-starred restaurants around the world for almost two decades.

Kirk wasn’t always a plant-based chef. In 2016, a diagnosis of Lyme Disease led him to overhaul his lifestyle and explore a plant-based diet in pursuit of health. This is how the concept of Plates was born. Delicious dishes without meat, gluten, refined sugar or dairy, but showing that plant-based cooking can be exciting and full of flavour.

Kirk Haworth is the son of celebrity chef Nigel Haworth and Kathrine Haworth. Born in Whalley, Lancashire, Nigel has appeared on hit shows including Masterchef, Great British Menu and Saturday Kitchen.

Kirk has three siblings. His sister, Keeley, is the co-founder and managing director of Plates restaurant. Raised in a family of chefs, Keeley curates and oversees all creative projects at Plates. After working in nutrition and marketing for one of the world’s leading sustainable food service operations, Keeley went on to start the brand agency, Studio La Plage. Plates forms an ideal platform to combine her passion for helping people to eat more plants, with creativity, health and sustainability.

In May 2023, Kirk paid tribute to Keeley on her birthday on Instagram. He wrote: “Happy birthday to my sister @keeleyhaworth AKA super mum, entrepreneur, visionary, creative, wife, general super woman not sure how you do it all but we so lucky you’re on our team.”

Kirk Haworth Great British Menu

Blackburn-born chef Kirk Haworth is competing for North West England on Series 19 of the Great British Menu with dishes inspired by the Olympics and Paralympics, alongside Andrew Sheridan, Nina Matsunaga and Ryan Stafford.

His menu in the competition is inspired by high-end athletes who need to be able to put on a performance of a lifetime during the Olympics, and delivered with sustainable innovative ingredients following the same ethos as in his restaurant.

Kirk Haworth Illness

In 2016, Kirk Haworth was diagnosed with Lyme disease after he began suffering chronic pain and memory loss. He contracted the illness from a tick bite while working in Sydney, Australia.

According to the NHS, Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Many people with early-stage Lyme disease develop a distinctive circular rash at the site of the tick bite, usually around 3 to 30 days after being bitten. Some also experience flu-like symptoms in the early stages, such as tiredness, muscle pain, headaches, fever, chills and neck stiffness.

More serious symptoms may develop several weeks, months or even years later if Lyme disease is left untreated or is not treated early. These range from pain and swelling of the joints to problems affecting the nervous system, facial paralysis, meningitis and heart block.
