Kheira Hamraoui is a French footballer who plays as a midfielder for Paris Saint-Germain and the France national team. She is in her second stint at PSG after previously playing for the club from 2012 to 2016. She went on to play at Olympique Lyonnais (2016-2018) and FC Barcelona (2018-2021) before returning to PSG. In July 2021, she signed for Paris Saint-Germain until 30 June 2023.
Kheira started at the Pôle France Féminin de football (ex-CNFE Clairefontaine) and made her debut in the first division with FCF Hénin-Beaumont in 2007. On November 4, 2021, Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Kheira Hamraoui attack on her way from a team dinner organized by PSG. Hamraoui was in a car driven by fellow midfielder Aminata Diallo when two masked men are alleged to have appeared around 10:30 p.m., pulled her from the passenger seat and hit her in the legs with an iron bar, the French sports newspaper L’Equipe reported.
The attack lasted a few minutes, and the attackers fled, the newspaper reported, citing sources familiar with the incident. She suffered injures to both of her legs and hands.
On November 10, 2021, midfielder Aminata Diallo was arrested in connection with the attack on her partner Kheira Hamraoui, Paris Saint-Germain confirmed in a statement.
The incident appears to echo the 1994 Tonya Harding scandal. In January 1994, Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly orchestrated an attack on her skating rival Nancy Kerrigan, who was hit in the legs with a baton and forced to withdraw from the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Harding ended up winning the competition.
She pleaded guilty to conspiracy to hinder prosecution in March 1994, and Gillooly was sentenced to prison. Harding was banned for life from the U.S. Figure Skating Association in June 1994.
