Judith Miller Biography – Judith Miller Wiki

Judith Miller was a Scottish antiques expert, author and broadcaster, who appeared on BBC One’s Antiques Roadshow. She was a successful lecturer and author, having written over 100 books on the subject of antiques.

Judith’s love of antiques did not start at an early age. A self-confessed child of the ‘Formica generation’, Judith didn’t begin collecting antiques until the 1960s whilst a student at Edinburgh University. Fascinated by the inexpensive plates she bought in the city’s junk stores, she began to research their history in books, auction catalogues, and at local antique fairs. She extended and reinforced her knowledge of antiques through international research.

In 1979, Judith co-founded the international bestseller Miller’s Antiques Price Guide with her first husband, Martin Miller, and it is still published annually. She wrote more than 100 books. Judith was a regular lecturer and she contributed to a number of national broadsheet newspapers and magazines. She also appeared regularly on radio and television in Britain and the United States.

Television

Judith Miller was widely known for appearing on television as an expert on Antiques Roadshow and The House Detectives. Some of Judith’s early TV appearances on the BBC were in 1995 and 1996 episodes of the property makeover show Home Front and in The Art and Antiques Hour in 1997. With the gossip columnist Ross Benson, she jointly presented all eight series of The Antiques Trail (1995-2002), screened in ITV’s Meridian and HTV regions.

She was a regular for the first four series of The House Detectives, from 1997 to 2000 (and the 1996 pilot).

In 2007 she joined the team on the BBC TV series Antiques Roadshow. “I was approached by Simon Shaw, the producer, as I’d worked with him on Home Front. Initially, I said I was too busy, but agreed to do one. After that, I was totally hooked and wanted to do as many as I could.” Her last episode was screened in October 2022.

She was also a regular for an Antiques Roadshow spin-off series, Antiques Roadshow Detectives, in 2015.

Ms. Miller estimated their value at more than 30,000 pounds (nearly $40,000).

Fiona Bruce, who has been a presenter on the programme since 2008, paid tribute to the Antiques Roadshow expert Judith Miller. She said: “When I started on the Antiques Roadshow, I was in awe of the experts – and none more so than Judith. She was Miller of Miller’s guides no less, the bible of the antiques world when it came to valuations.

“Plus, she had authored many other books, too many to list, some of which were already on my bookshelf. But she was always gracious and generous with her knowledge, helpful to me and our whole team.

“And when our filming day had finished, she was never short of great stories accompanied by a glass of her favourite tipple, pinot grigio.

“She was the doyenne of the antiques world and of our show. Irreplaceable. And hugely missed.”

Alison Starling of Octopus Publishing Group, the parent company of Mitchell Beazley, said: “I’ve been lucky enough to work with Judith on and off for the last 30 years and the news of her death is a huge shock.

“She had such energy and spirit and always combined her impressively broad-ranging, in-depth knowledge of antiques with a lifelong passion to make the world of collecting accessible and unintimidating to all.

“Judith will be much missed by all those readers and viewers who looked to her for expert and reassuringly friendly advice, and of course here at Octopus, where she established longstanding friendships with numerous members of staff over the years, forged through topics of conversation as diverse as work, family, dogs, Scottish rugby and her other passion, Bruce Springsteen.”
