John Nyagarama (born John Obiero Nyagarama) was a Kenyan politician and the first Governor of Nyamira County. was elected as the Governor of Nyamira County in March 2013, subsequently retaining his seat for a second term beginning August 2017. He was a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

After graduating from the University of Nairobi where he earned a bachelor’s degree in literature, he worked as a teacher at Nduru Boys Secondary School from 1975 to 1976. He then taught at Nyanshiongo Boys High School until 1978, when he transferred to Menyenya High School. He later stopped teaching and began farming, focusing on tea production. He joined the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) as a management trainee and eventually became a manager in various KTDA branches countrywide. He was managing director of the privately-owned Sotik Tea Factory from 1991 to 1992.

He left tea farming and joined Touchline Press Limited, a private publishing company, as its chief executive officer, before going on to establish a tea export company in Mombasa, Kenya in 1993. In 1994, he was elected to serve on the KTDA’s board as a director representing the tea zones of Marani, in Kisii County, and certain centers within Nyamira County. He continued to hold various roles for the KTDA from 1994 to 2013. He also served as the chairman of Kenya Tea Packers Limited (KETEPA) between 1996 and 2002, and was among the founders of the Chai Trading Company in 2011, serving as chairman until his resignation in 2013 to pursue a political career.

He ran for the parliamentary seat of West Mugirango Constituency in the December 2007 general elections. However, he was unsuccessful. On March 4, 2013, he became a candidate for the governorship of Nyamira County, running on the Orange Democratic Movement ticket, which he won. He was sworn into office on 27 March 2013. In August 2017, he won a second term in a tight race against James Gesami and Walter Nyambati, the latter a former Member of Parliament from Kitutu Chache.

Nyamira governor John Nyagarama died on 18 December 2020 at the Nairobi Hospital due to Covid-19 complications. He was put on life support on Sunday night, 13 December 2020, and his family was called in on Monday, 14 December 2020, after his condition deteriorated.

ODM leader Raila Odinga also mourned Nyagarama on Twitter. He wrote: “I am deeply saddened to learn of Governor John Nyagarama’s death. My sympathies to his family and the people of Nyamira as we mourn his death and reflect on his life. Nyagarama has been an extraordinary partner in strengthening devolution. I will forever cherish moments with him on duty and as personal friends. May His Soul Rest In Eternal Peace.”

Council of Governor chairman Wycliff Oparanya paid tribute to Nyagarama in the following statement: “I am shocked to receive the sad news of the death of Nyarnira County Governor His Excellency John Nyagarama which occurred today in Nairobi. Nyagarama was progressive, insightful. selfless and industrious Govemor who was committed to transforming the livelihoods of the people of Nyamira County. As a pioneer Governor of Nyamira. he initiated many development projects that have transformed the County. His death is a big blow not only to his family but also to the people of Nyamira and Kenyans at large who have lost a dedicated son and leader. On a personal level. I have lost a great friend and colleague whom we have worked together at the Council of Governors to ensure devolution works and the gains made by the County Govemments are wholesomely defended. He was a person full of progressive ideas and advice that contributed towards a progressive Kenya. Nyagarama’s legacy lives on. Fare-thee-well my brother John.”
