John died by suicide on January 18, 2019. Police were dispatched to Coughlin’s father’s home in Kansas City for a report of a suicide.

John Coughlin Suspension

On January 17, 2019, he was suspended from figure skating indefinitely by the US Center for SafeSport. On January 17, 2019 the U.S. Center for SafeSport issued the following interim measure regarding U.S. Figure Skating member John Coughlin:

“Temporary Suspension. Beginning on January 17, 2019, Responding Party John Coughlin is prohibited from participating, in any capacity, in any activity or competition authorized by, organized by, or under the auspices of the United States Olympic Committee, the national governing bodies recognized by the United States Olympic Committee, including U.S. Figure Skating, and/or a Local Affiliated Organization of a national governing body recognized by the United States Olympic Committee.

Pursuant to U.S. Figure Skating Bylaw Article XXV, Section 2, U.S. Figure Skating hereby suspends John Coughlin, beginning on January 17, 2019, pending final resolution of the matter by the U.S. Center for SafeSport.”

John Coughlin Sexual Assault Allegations

John was temporarily suspended from US figure skating by the US Center for SafeSport amid a pending grievance. US Figure Skating announced his suspension without disclosing details of the matter.  The center is a US Olympic Committee agency with oversight of sexual misconduct and other abuse allegations reported to national governing bodies.

In May 2019, in a Facebook post, former skating partner Bridget Namiotka accused Coughlin of sexually abusing her over a period of two years during the mid-2000s. She had skated with him while she was between the ages of 14 and 17. He was four years older than her.

In July 2019, former US ladies’ champion and World silver medalist Ashley Wagner reported that Coughlin had sexually assaulted her in 2008 at a US national team training camp.
