In April 2019, Janah was diagnosed with epithelioid sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. She tweeted: “I’ve been diagnosed with epithelioid sarcoma. I plan to continue my core CEO/Chairman duties at @Samasource + as founder of @LXMIofficial while undergoing treatment. Grateful to have top care + support.”
She wrote in a Linkedin article, “I recently learned I have a rare but treatable form of cancer: epithelioid sarcoma. I plan to continue my core CEO & Chairman duties at @Samasource, and as founder of @LXMIofficial, with accommodation for treatment and healing. Billions of people around the world don’t have access to decent work or medical care, as I do. If anything, this diagnosis affirms my commitment to our work, and my resolve to beat cancer so I can continue doing what I love for decades to come.
“This was a challenging diagnosis for me to handle emotionally. My partner and I were in the midst of planning a wedding. I have been forced to take a break from kitesurfing. Being held back by surgery and recovering at home feels like a prison sentence. But no one is immune to illness.
“Susan Sontag said it best: “Illness is the night side of life, a more onerous citizenship. Everyone who is born holds dual citizenship, in the kingdom of the well and in the kingdom of the sick. Although we all prefer to use the good passport, sooner or later each of us is obliged, at least for a spell, to identify ourselves as citizens of that other place.” So here’s to gaining another passport, and another life experience.”

Previously the organization’s COO, Wendy has spent the past five years working alongside Leila to craft Samasource’s vision and strategy.
“Samaschool will continue to serve those gaining skills for the new economy, and LXMI will continue to operate and provide meaningful, dignified work to women in East Africa.
“We will miss Leila’s infectious laugh, her tenacious spirit, and her ability to inspire all she encountered to be a force for good in the world. Our deepest sympathies extend to Leila’s husband, Tassilo, her stepdaughter, her family, and her friends. With love. The Sama Family”

Gratuitous glamour shot with a jar of #CremeduNil in honor of our @lxmiofficial BIODEGRADABLE RESIN (!!) jars the team has worked so hard on. Very few beauty companies are solving for the ugly plastics problem our industry contributes to, because it costs more and takes longer to find the sustainable option. By the end of next year we’re phasing out all plastic, which will impact millions of units across sampling boxes, retail sales, and our lxmi.com shop. So proud of this team! #zerowaste #plasticfree #lxmi
