In 2008, Gary admitted he signed up for an appearance on “Strictly Come Dancing” to prove something to his wife, Jennie. Rhodes told the Daily Mail in 2008: “It was actually to prove something to my wife, Jennie, as much as anything else. When Jennie and I have sat watching Strictly at home, I’ve always been the one to point to the dancers and say, “I could do better than that”, or “That looks easy, if you are shown how to do it”. Of course, she would roll her eyes and say , “Yeah, yeah”. So, in the end, I decided to do the show for her. I wanted to prove that I could, for once, do something spontaneous.”
He added: “After 30 years of being together and 30 years of me never dancing to any song at a party, I really wanted to learn enough to take my own wife in my arms and be her partner.”

Gary Rhodes died on 26 November 2019 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates at the age of 59. Gary Rhodes’s family confirmed his death in a statement. The family said in a statement: “The Rhodes family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of beloved husband, father and brother, Gary Rhodes OBE. Gary passed away last evening, Tuesday 26th November 2019, at the age of 59, with his beloved wife Jennie by his side. The family would like to thank everyone for their support and ask for privacy during this time.”
Rhodes was filming a new series in Dubai for Rock Oyster Media and Goldfinch TV. The production companies said in a joint statement, “Gary was in the middle of filming a wonderful new series with Rock Oyster Media for ITV from his base in Dubai. All at Rock Oyster Media and Goldfinch are devastated by this tragic news. Gary was taken ill very suddenly at home during a break in filming and died a short time afterwards. Production was obviously halted as soon as Gary was taken ill and members of the Rock Oyster Team remain in Dubai to support the family as best they can.”
Rhodes had a restaurant called Rhodes W1 at Grosvenor House Dubai and another named Rhodes Twenty10 at Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort. Two hotels released the following joint statement:
