He died on 11 April 2019 after falling ill on stage during a stand-up performance at the Atic bar in Bicester, England. The audience initially thought it was a part of the act, until emergency services were called in. The audience were evacuated and he was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
The ambulance service said in a statement: “We were called at 22:11 last night to Crown Walk in Bicester to a medical emergency. We sent a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance crew but sadly one patient passed away at the scene.”
Comedians took to social media to pay tribute to Cognito. Jimmy Carr, best known for his performances on the TV show “8 Out of 10 Cats,” wrote on Twitter: “Veteran stand-up comedian Ian Cognito has died on-stage – literally. The audience thought it was part of the act. Died with his boots on. That’s commitment to comedy. I’ll never forget his kindness when I started out & how god damn funny he was.”
