Gabrielle Blackman is a British interior designer, TV presenter, speaker and writer. She has worked with BBC1 DIYSOS since 2012 using her skills as a designer to transform the lives of families in need. She is also the presenter of the Children In Need special.

As one of the show’s most popular designers, she was the designer on DIY SOS’s biggest challenges, including the RTS winning transformation of a whole street of houses in Manchester for Wounded Veterans (with help from Princes William and Harry) and the RTS and NTA nominated build of a new community centre and boxing gym for the people of Grenfell Tower in London.

Gabrielle Blackman’s son Gus passed away in February 2006. Gus had Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). According to the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, “HLHS is a birth defect that affects normal blood flow through the heart. As the baby develops during pregnancy, the left side of the heart does not form correctly.”

He had successful operations, which would, in time, have given him the chance to have more operations. But sadly he contracted MRSA in Birmingham Children’s Hospital. He was taken to their Bristol home for Christmas, but he never shook off the infection. He died after emergency surgery. Gus’s funeral was delayed for many weeks due, apparently, to the chronic shortage of paediatric pathologists and the consequent delay in the post mortem.
