Erica-Cody is a singer, songwriter, and producer from North Dublin, Ireland. She is known for her work on Fate: The Winx Saga (2021) and Imbolc (2021) as of her IMDb profile. In December 2021, it was announced that Cody will be taking part in the fifth series of the Irish Version of Dancing with the Stars. Cody started singing at an early age and she started writing her own songs from the age of 7. When she was 15, she landed her first live gig as the support act for WizKid.

She came to the limelight in 2017 after was released Addicted. In April 2019, she released her EP called Leoness and in April 2020, Cody was featured in Hot Press’s Lockdown Sessions. She was also part of female singers and musicians named “Irish Women in Harmony”, which recorded a version of Dreams in aid of the charity SafeIreland in 2020. In 2021, she made a cameo in an episode of the Netflix series Fate: The Winx Saga which was filmed in Wicklow.

Cody attended the Billie Barry Stage School. She later attended BIMM Dublin, where she studied vocals. Growing up, she hoped to take after her father and become a professional basketball player, until she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury at age 18. The injury made it hard for her to play basketball.

Who are Erica-Cody’s parents? Her parents are Cuiva and Gerald Kennedy. Her mother, Cuiva, is a former All-Ireland gymnast while her dad, Gerald Kennedy, is a former professional basketball player. He is an African-American from North Carolina, the United States. Erica’s parents were fans of hip hop and ’90s R&B.

Her mother was diagnosed with cancer when she was 10. She told the Irish Examiner: “My mam definitely had that mother’s instinct of ‘no, she can’t see me in pain and suffering’, so I think she tried to make it as positive an experience as possible. I’d go in and sit with her, and we’d have Marks & Spencer onion rings and cookies because she loved them.

“She’d be getting chemo and I’d be reading a magazine and we’d be chatting about the magazine. I didn’t know it was as serious as it was. I’m just so grateful that she’s still here.”

Her father, Gerald Kennedy who is originally from South Carolina, had been a professional player. Erica played basketball since she was a child. She told the Irish Examiner:

“Music and basketball are the two loves of my life, besides my dogs and my tortoise and my partner… basketball taught me a lot of discipline. The thoughts I have in my head are that I’m only as good as my last game, I’m only as good as my last gig or my last song or my last EP. I like to constantly grow and evolve.”

When she was 17 and studying for her Leaving Cert, Erica considered moving to America to play basketball. She then decided to stay in Ireland, play basketball and study music. At the age of 18, she tore her anterior cruciate ligament and couldn’t play basketball anymore. She was facing into nine months of intense rehabilitation to learn how to walk again, and she decided to go full throttle on her music.

Erica-Cody is the only daughter of former professional basketball player Gerald Kennedy, and Cuiva, a former all-Ireland gymnast. She has a half-sister on her dad’s side and a half-brother who resides in Ireland.
