Ellen Keane Biography – Ellen Keane Wiki

Ellen Keane is a Paralympic swimmer from Dublin, Ireland. The Irish compete in S9, SM9, and SB8 classification events. In 2021, Ellen won a gold medal at the delayed 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. She also won a bronze medal in the 100 m breaststroke (SB8) at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. In December 2021, it was announced that she will be taking part in the fifth series of the Irish version of Dancing with the Stars.

Ellen was born without her left arm below the elbow. She later joined swim classes where she learned swimming. She made her Paralympic debut at age 13 at the 2008 Games in Beijing, China. She became the youngest Irish athlete to compete at Paralympic Games. Ellen initially did not understand the magnitude of the occasion until she raced against one of her idols, South African swimmer Natalie du Toit.

She said: “I didn’t fully appreciate it at the time, how bizarre it was being that young at a Paralympic Games because no one treated me any differently. The only time I remember being kind of a bit afraid and overwhelmed was at my first or second race. I was in the same heat as Natalie du Toit, my idol. She had just competed in the Beijing Olympics as well as the Paralympics and she was twice the size of me, and here’s me, the little tiny yolk. That’s the only time I remember feeling my age. Things that just don’t affect you as much when you’re young because you’re just kind of living in the moment and you don’t worry about things and I think that’s something that I wish I still had.”

In 2016, she represented Ireland at the Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro and she won the bronze medal. In 2018, she won a gold medal in the SB8 100m breaststroke at the European Championships in Dublin, Ireland. She described the win as her memorable sporting achievement. In 2021, she competed in the delayed 2020 Summer Paralympics where she captured the first Paralympics gold medal for Ireland.

In June 2017, she was honored by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Brendan Carr, with a Lord Mayor’s Award, which is awarded ‘to citizens who, through their ordinary everyday lives, enrich this city in an extraordinary way’. She was also named Para Swimmer of the Year at the 2018 Swim Ireland Annual Awards. Ellen attended Holy Faith Clontarf and later joined Kelly College. In 2018, she graduated from Technological University Dublin with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), in Culinary Entrepreneurship. Ellen Keane Parents

Ellen’s parents are Eddie and Laura Keane. After Ellen won gold in the 100m breaststroke at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, the champagne was flowing in her family home in Dollymount Co Dublin as Ellen Keane’s parents toasted their daughter’s first ever Paralympics gold.

Ellen’s mother Laura told RTE: “I can’t put it into words how proud of her I am. It’s so emotional. She was just amazing. I have never seen her swim like that in my life. She was brilliant, absolutely brilliant. This will mean so much to her. She’s fought so long to get to this stage – the gold medal. I mean the gold medal is absolutely out of this world, but to get a personal best in the heat and then to top if off with another PB, that is every bit as good as the medal if not more for her. It’s so long since she’s got a PB and this is absolutely unreal. She just was amazing. I’m just totally overcome with the whole thing. I nearly collapsed with the nerves. My legs were going like jelly. I’m just so, so happy. We’re all so proud of her.”

Eddie said: “We’re so proud. We can’t believe she got a gold medal. She’s unbelievable. We love her so much.”

In an interview with journalist Siobhan OConnor, Ellen Keane’s parents told how their daughter’s Paralympic gold medal win proves the sky is the limit for people with disabilities. The proud parents praised their daughter and said she was determined to succeed from an early age.

Eddie revealed her coach David Malone always said she had the power to go all the way to the top through talent, grit and determination.

He added: “The coaches always said she was determined to do something special as she was always committed to swimming. That made her stronger and she wanted to leave home at 17, we said ‘no way’. But a psychologist we met through Paralympics Ireland said the more she does for herself, the stronger a person she’ll be. It’s a lesson for all parents, let them live their own life, if they do things wrong they’ll build on that.”

Mum Laura told the Irish Mirror: “At home everything was done for her, but when she went out on her own she became so independent and thrived.”
