Duncan Pegg was an Australian politician. He was elected as the Member for Stretton in 2015 and served as chair of the Tourism Development and Environment Committee. On April 22, 2021, Pegg announced that he would retire from politics to focus on his health battle.
In an emotional speech to Queensland Parliament, Pegg said it was with a heavy heart he had to step away as an MP. “Up until this point I’ve been able to effectively represent my local area while fighting against cancer,” Pegg said.
“Based on my most recent medical advice, I will no longer be able to both fight cancer, and also fight for my local area in the manner in which my community deserves.
“I do not want to leave this place and cease representing the community that I love, but I know the decision to resign is the right one.”
Pegg spoke of his love for his community and his local legacy that included improvements to local schools and safer roads.
He also used his speech to urge MPs to listen to terminal illness patients when conscience voting on voluntary assisted dying (VAD) legislation, which is expected before the House later this year.
He previously worked as a lawyer, and in 2017 was recognised for his community work when he was awarded the Queensland Public Service Award from the Queensland Intercultural Society.
