Domnall Starkie is an interior designer, graphic designer, artist and a contestant on series 5 of Interior Design Masters on BBC One. He is the founder of Smart Swag Design, a Derry-based studio + shop, offering hand-crafted products and bespoke services relating to art, design, fashion and furniture.

In 2013, artist Domnall Starkie created the winning design of an 18-metre mosaic constructed from images supplied through Facebook to commemorate Derry-Londonderry’s role as the UK’s City of Culture 2013. His work is known to provide a social commentary in a graphic style and his winning piece was seen to symbolise the cultural identity of Derry.

Domnall is well known for his eclectic range of unique pieces of art, upcycled furniture and jewellery. He has also turned his attention to producing a bold and dynamic clothing collection based on his own unique graphic printing style.

While Domnall has always been creative, working with textiles is practically in his DNA, thanks to his family connection with the Derry shirt industry.

“When I was growing up I was very conscious of the importance of textiles and clothing,” he told Derry Daily. “My granny was a seamstress and she worked in the shirt factories like so many women who were the backbone of local industry back in the day. She showed me how to use a sewing machine so she gave me the practical skills to produce my work.”

In December 2018, Domnall was one of eight designers selected to showcase their collections at the UK’s leading fashion tradeshow ‘Pure London’ on February 10 to 12, 2019. The designers were selected as part of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s ‘Designer Enterprise Programme’ following a special Dragon’s Den-style ‘pitching’ event held at the Inner City Trust’s Fashion & Textile Design Centre (FTDC) on Shipquay Street.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Domnall graduated from the University of Lincoln with a Bachelor’s in Illustration and Graphic Design.

“I originally did my degree in illustration, but never wanted my creativity to be limited to just one aspect of art and design,” he said in a previous interview.
