DJ Kay Slay (born Keith Grayson) was an American DJ, record executive and music promoter. He got his start as a teenage graffiti artist in New York and was featured in the 1983 hip hop documentary “Style Wars.” He began selling bootleg mixtapes on street corners in the early ’90s and released his first studio album, “The Streetsweeper, Vol. 1,” in May 2003. Grayson released a total of six studio albums and worked with top artists in hip hop including Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Jadakiss, Fabolous, Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Foxy Brown, and many more.

Grayson rose through the ranks by refereeing the biggest MC battles on his Streetsweeper mixtapes. Known as the Drama King, Kay Slay grew up in Harlem making a name for himself as a DJ. He signed his first deal with Violator records with the late Chris Lighty, and released his first two albums, Street Sweepers Volumes 1 & 2, through Columbia/Sony Records.

In 2004, Grayson became head of A&R for Shaquille O’Neal’s label DEJA34 where he released his third album, The Champions, featuring DJ Greg Street. Kay Slay continued mixing and releasing wild albums such as 2017’s “The Big Brother”, 2019’s “Hip-Hop Frontline” and December 2021’s “The Soul Controller”.

He was also the A&R of Ray J’s Album, “All I Feel,” featuring hit song “Sexy Can I.” In 2005, he signed one the most lyrical artists in hip hop, Papoose. Because of this ear for talent, Slay also received recognition from other big name hip hop DJs, winning several “Justo’s Mixtape Awards”.

Grayson was the CEO of Straight Stuntin’ Magazine. The magazine hits newsstands quarterly and features interviews with the top Hip Hop artists and the sexiest models in the game. In 2014, Kay Slay was the man behind connecting two NYC rivals on his hit single, “Free Again”, featuring Fat Joe and 50 Cent.

Hip-hop pioneer DJ Kay Slay passed away on April 17, 2022, at the age of 55 after a four-month battle with COVID-19. His death was confirmed by his family in a statement released through New York radio station HOT 97, where he hosted “The Drama Hour” for more than two decades.

The Grayson Family statement read, “Our hearts are broken by the passing of Keith Grayson, professionally known as DJ Kay Slay. A dominant figure in hip hop culture with millions of fans worldwide, dj kay slay will be remembered for his passion and excellence with a legacy that will transcend generations. In memory of dj kay slay, our family wishes to thank all of his friends, fans, and supporters for their prayers and well wishes during this difficult time. We ask that you respect our privacy as we grieve this tragic loss.”
