Charlie Teo is an Australian high-profile neurosurgeon, famous for his reputation of taking on patients who other doctors have deemed inoperable. He attended Scots College and later graduated from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 1981.

Charlie began general neurosurgery at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown, Australia. He later moved to the United States and worked at the Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Charlie was the only Australian neurosurgeon certified by a United States medical board. He worked in the United States for almost a decade. Upon moving back to his native country, Charlie was appointed as the director of the Centre for Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney.

Teo said: “My mother, Elizabeth, has been, and always will be, the most important person in my life. She is a remarkable woman, and taught me qualities like honesty, kindness and generosity.

“Her first language was Chinese, so her grasp of English wasn’t good. She quoted proverbs to me, which she often got wrong, so my values were learnt via osmosis. Like when a painter came to our house: whether he did a good job or not, she’d cook a bowl of fried rice to thank him.

“My mother rejected her upbringing in Singapore. Her intellect was equivalent to her brother’s, but she was pulled out of school when her father died to look after the family and cook. Meanwhile, her brother’s education continued. When the Japanese invaded in World War II, they beheaded her pet cat. She wanted to put that cruelty behind her, too.

“My father, Philip, was a doctor. He was both cruel and unfaithful to my mother and left when I was nine. He wanted me to be the archetypal male but I didn’t meet his expectations. He took me to the funfair and I didn’t want to go on the Ferris wheel because it made me vomit, so I was hit for being a coward.

“When my father beat me, my mother would look after me. She came to my rugby games and barracked for me. She gave me a sense of worth, even though I wasn’t very good at sport.”

Is Charlie Teo still married? He was previously married to his ex-wife Genevieve Teo (nee Agnew). They separated in 2018 after 30 years of marriage. Dr Teo and his ex-wife share four daughters.

Dr Teo and Genevieve Agnew met when he was 25 while she was working at hospital as a nurse. In a past interview, the neurosurgeon discussed how he met his wife and his mother’s reaction. He said: “I was 25 and swimming at a repatriation hospital pool when I saw my wife Genevieve walk past. It was love at first sight. Initially it was her beauty, but she also makes me laugh.

“At first, my mother didn’t like her. She disliked that Genevieve was white, trendy and smoked dope. She wanted me to marry a dutiful Chinese girl. Genevieve is incredibly loyal. When colleagues attack me, she’s by my side.”
