Caitlin Moran is an Australian professional rugby league footballer who plays as a halfback for the Newcastle Knights in the NRL Women’s Premiership.

The talented halfback and Jillaroo grew up playing footy in Newcastle and went onto play a pivotal role for Australia at the 2017 World Cup kicking a decisive field goal in the final. She has also represented NSW and the Indigenous All Stars.

In 2018, Moran suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury which ruled her out of the inaugural NRL Women’s season. She made her debut for the West Brisbane Panthers Womens on 25 April 2021.

In June 2022, Moran signed with the Newcastle Knights for the 2022 season. She made her debut for the Newcastle Knights Women on 21 August 2022.

On Friday 9 September 2022, NRLW player Caitlin Moran posted a highly controversial social media post following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The NRLW star has since deleted the Instagram post, which featured a picture of Queen Elizabeth.

The post read: “Todays a good fkn day, uncle Luke announces his tour, and this dumb dog dies Happy fkn Friday.” She deleted the post from her Instagram story approximately eight hours after posting it.

On Tuesday 13 September 2022, the National Rugby League (NRL) issued Newcastle Knights player Caitlin Moran with a Breach Notice alleging a breach of the NRLW Code of Conduct following an offensive social media post referencing the Queen’s death.

“The Breach Notice proposes a fine equivalent to 25% of her current NRLW contract, wholly suspended, provided she fulfils a number of conditions. The Breach Notice also proposes a one match suspension in the NRL Women’s Premiership Competition. The fine will be suspended for a period of 12 months to be payable immediately should the Code be further breached in that period.

“There will be a further requirement that Moran attend such education and training as is recommended by the NRL’s Wellbeing and Education Department, in consultation with the Australian Rugby League Indigenous Council, concerning her responsibilities as a Player and the appropriate use of social media.”

The Newcastle Knights issued the following statement: “The Newcastle Knights have today [9 September 2022] supported the National Rugby League Integrity Unit’s move to issue player Caitlin Moran with a one game suspension and undisclosed fine, wholly suspended for a period of 12 months, in relation to a post she made on social media on Friday 9 September 2022.

“Moran today met with National Rugby League Chief Executive Officer Andrew Abdo to discuss the situation, after which the following actions were determined.

“Moran will not play in Sunday’s round five NRLW clash against the St. George-Illawarra Dragons at Central Coast Stadium.

“She will also be required to attend education and training as recommended by the NRL Wellbeing and Education department in consultation with the Club and the Australian Rugby League Indigenous Council.

“In addition, the Club has committed to undertake further educational programs for both NRLW and NRL squads.

“The Club has and will continue to provide Moran with appropriate support and will be making no further comment on the matter.”
