Teddy Gentry Biography – Teddy Gentry Wiki

Teddy Gentry is a founding member of and bass player for the country music group Alabama. Gentry and lead singer Randy Owen founded Alabama — then called Wild Country — in 1969 in Fort Payne. Lead guitarist and fiddle player Jeff Cook joined the group soon after. The band changed its name to Alabama in 1977 and went on to sell more than 70 million albums.

The band became one of the most successful groups in country music, peaking in the 1980s with multi-platinum albums and a slew of radio hits that included “Tennessee River,” “Mountain Music,” “Dixieland Delight,” “The Closer You Get,” “Song of the South,” “Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)” and many more.

Gentry was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in November 2005 along with his partners in Alabama. As part of his acceptance speech, Gentry remarked, “Being put into the Country Music Hall of Fame is the greatest achievement of Alabama’s career. I am moved and honored to be in the elite company of my heroes.”

The group said it was retiring from the road and staged a farewell tour in 2007, but has since returned to performing. They continue to play shows and make appearances, particularly through Randy Owen’s charitable efforts with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Teddy Gentry Farm

After receiving his first check from RCA records in 1980 for $61,000, he purchased 60 acres from his grandfather, which he called Bent Tree Farms. On where the farm’s name came from, Gentry said:

“My son Josh [ Gentry] was in the second or third grade. One night we were going over rhymes, we had rhymed several words and suddenly I said our last name — Gentry. To which he replied, Bent Tree. I was telling one of the boys working on the farm the next day about my son’s saying Bent Tree. He replied, ‘You know what a bent tree is?’ I said, ‘no.’”

“He said, ‘In Oklahoma, where I used to live, there were Bent Trees that the Indians would bend over when the trees were small and tie them to the ground, to point the direction the tribe was moving at the time.’”

“I contacted a lady at the Alabama Historical Society who told me there were bent trees along the top of Lookout Mountain and Little River Canyon where our farm is. When we found out this information, we decided to change the name of the farm to Bent Tree Farms.”

Bent Tree Farms is the home of the South Poll breed. Gentry started the South Poll breed in 1989 when he got the idea to genetically combine the best traits of four maternal Bos Taurus breeds to form a more heat tolerant animal that would work for his cattle operation. The South Poll is a four way cross of Hereford, Red Angus, Senepol, and Barzona. He wanted an animal with a gentle disposition and would produce tender beef on grass.
