Birgit Cunningham Biography – Birgit Cunningham Wiki

Birgit Cunningham is a British-American events organizer, activist, and campaigner for the rights of single mothers.

Born in San Francisco, she was educated at Roedean and then earned a degree in history of art at Rutgers University. At twenty-two, she moved to Paris and worked in an art gallery.

In 1987, Cunningham moved to Chelsea, London, and became a yacht broker in the City of London.

Moving to Los Angeles, she took a job as a personal assistant to a vice president of Universal Pictures. In 1993, William Cash thanked Cunningham for her help with his book Educating William: Memoirs of a Hollywood Correspondent.

Upon returning from California, she joined Alcoholics Anonymous. She lived in a commune in Devon, actively supporting Greenpeace and working for The Ecologist magazine and the Green Party. In 1999, she played a key role in organizing an organic picnic in Greenwich, garnering support from celebrities. As an events organizer, she coordinated green protests against genetically modified (GM) food.

In a notable incident at a National Farmers’ Union conference in February 2000, Cunningham protested against the financial crisis facing small farmers by squashing a chocolate éclair into the face of Nick Brown, the Labour government’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food. Although she later expressed regret, the act drew attention to the struggles of small farmers. Cunningham’s involvement with The Ecologist led to speculation about the magazine organizing a conference on the real farm crisis.

In 2001, Cunningham joined the Green Party as a senior press officer for the Green members of the newly established London Assembly.

Subsequently, Cunningham pursued a paralegal course at Westminster College and became an advocate for child support reform. She formed the group Babies for Justice, merged later with Mothers for Justice, and organized a protest march to Downing Street.

In 2004, she gave evidence to the House of Commons Work and Pensions Committee regarding the Child Support Agency’s performance. A court hearing in 2005 confirmed Nuttall’s child support at £5.40 a week, and during an altercation outside the court, Cunningham kneed Nuttall in the groin. She received a conditional discharge after pleading guilty.

Despite various legal efforts, Cunningham faced challenges in securing child support, and Nuttall claimed to have no income. In 2011, it was revealed that she had encounters with Thomas Strathclyde, Conservative Leader in the House of Lords, between 2003 and 2011. Cunningham later sold the story to a newspaper in 2011, expressing frustration with the government’s stance on family values. In 2011, she issued a public apology to Lady Strathclyde.

By 2011, Cunningham was dealing with back pain caused by scoliosis and degenerative disc disease, diagnosed in 2006. In 2012, she found herself in a wheelchair, hoping for surgical intervention to address her health issues.
