Bex Simon Biography – Bex Simon Wiki

Bex Simon is an artist blacksmith, designer and metalworker whose designs embody her fascination with the contrast between organic, natural forms and hard industrial materials. Art nouveau stylings distinguish her pieces which she combines with striking contemporary forms and traditional.

Bex has always been an artist with a fascination for texture and material. Whilst undertaking a Foundation in Art at the Surrey Institute, Bex attended a demonstration of forging and welding, and realised that blacksmithing was a skill she had to explore and incorporate into her unique, organic-influenced artwork.

A firm believer that there is always more to learn, Bex continues to study techniques old and new, always seeking out ways to apply traditional craft to modern ideas; proud of what she’s achieved but aware that there’s always room for improvement.

Bex admits to being slightly backwards in her approach to design: “I work using shape, form and balance – never really considering the technical aspect until the design is finished. This way I don’t restrict myself. I also love collaborating with others as it means the possibilities are endless.”

Fiercely individual, Bex’s favourite shops are flea markets, where she can pick and blend styles from any era. She buys clothes in second hand shops, so that she can avoid fashion and make her own style. She can’t decide if her favourite place is the Victoria & Albert Museum, or the Science Museum. After being tested at an early age, her parents were told that Bex would either be an artist or a fighter pilot.

Bex sees Artist Blacksmiths today as those who use the traditions of the ancient craft of blacksmithing with contemporary forms of metal-smithing to produce modern artwork. Bex refers to herself as an ‘artsmith’ to distinguish this new style. She is unconstrained in her approach to design, drawing inspiration from limitless sources of research.

And that is how Bex Simon works: blending traditional craft with contemporary design and modern methods of fabrication; fizzing with creativity and passion for her art; embodying the very idea of the artsmith.

“I love the idea that you can take something so hard and strong, add heat to make it malleable, almost fluid, and create something beautiful. And then when it cools, and the hard properties return, the movement and life remain, encapsulated in the artwork forever.”

Bex’s work include high end interior design, bespoke metalwork commissions – featuring bespoke gates, railings and balconies – sculptural pieces for gardens of any scale, and cast iron kitchenware.

Since becoming an artist blacksmith in 1999, her work has been mostly by commission, including a 40-metre installation at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. In 2019 she became the first woman to be awarded the prestigious Tonypandy Cup for blacksmithing, an award given annually by the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths.

Bex is the owner of BexSimon Collections Ltd, which design and develop cast iron products for volume manufacturing and wholesale distribution, and BexSimon Ltd, which undertake design and fabrication commissions of bespoke metal art for private and commercial clients. She previously owned BexSimon Artist Blacksmith, a bespoke metalwork business which created original functional and no-functional artworks for public and private clients, according to her Linkedin profile.

In August 2021, Bex wrote a bipolar blog titled “THE BIPOLAR BLACKSMITH,” about her exeperience with Bipolar Disorder. She wrote in part: “It was actually great for BexSimon, the Blacksmith business, when I was getting into a real bipolar pickle with myself, having panic attacks, thinking people were after me, jumping at my own shadow, hearing voices and wanting to hug the entire train carriage of people, as I had to focus on something to try and keep myself from going completely mad! And at the start of the blacksmith business I worked! I worked my socks off. I filled my brain with blacksmith work to try and quash the darkness and conspiracies going on around me……..the Bipolar me!

“It was only after I suffered a panic attack in front of a client, that I knew I needed to find out what was wrong with me, and finally I was diagnosed and treated.”

One of her biggest blacksmith commissions is based on mental illness. Bex was commissioned by the Campbell Mental Health centre in Milton Keynes to design and make a gate and perimeter fence around the grounds. She worked with the patients, many of whom were bipolar, and together we came up with the designs.

From one side, the fence is cut out from sheet, so the design is the negative space, this represents the dark depression and as you follow it around it changes into a railing with the detail welded on, this is coming out of the darkness and into the light, positive space. The gate is called ‘the possibilities are endless’, and in it we had lots of panels with different things going on in a very sun like shape, this represented that the future is bright after treatment. This gate leads you out of the grounds…. encouraging you to go and explore the world again!
