Ben Jordan was a University of Kentucky baseball player who was also a member of the Kentucky basketball team. The Olive Hill, Kentucky, native had a 7.27 earned run average in 2019 after pitching 8 2/3 innings over 10 games and allowed eight hits, eight runs (seven earned), 12 walks with eight strikeouts.

He joined Kentucky’s basketball team during the 2019-20 season when it lacked enough players for practice. He played just one minute in two games, but practicing against 6-11 Nick Richards was cited in helping Richards become a first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection by The Associated Press and coaches.

As a freshman during the 2017-18 season, he did not participate in basketball and redshirted in baseball as he recovered from injury. As a Redshirt Freshman during the 2018-19 season, he did not participate in basketball and returned to the baseball diamond after redshirting the 2017-18 season while recuperating from an injury. He appeared in 10 games on the diamond. He logged 8.2 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs while striking out eight. He made his collegiate debut in baseball on Feb. 17 vs. Austin Peay. He pitched a scoreless inning vs. No. 2 Vanderbilt to close out the season.

He attended West Carter High School, where he concluded his career as the school’s all-time leading rebounder and shot blocker. He also finished eighth in school history in career points. Mitch Barnhart, University of Kentucky Director of Athletics, said in a statement: “It is with profound grief that we learn of the loss of Ben Jordan. Ben loved and cherished being a Wildcat. He had a servant’s heart and answered the call whenever asked, including putting his promising baseball career on hold to help the basketball team when it needed him. I remember meeting Ben on his official visit to our campus and being so impressed with his passion for this state and the University of Kentucky. He will be missed immensely. Our prayers and condolences are with Ben’s family and friends.”

John Calipari, University of Kentucky Head Basketball Coach, said in a statement: “Our hearts are broken today. We learned early this morning that we have lost Ben Jordan. It is difficult for me to express and to put into words what a tragedy it is to lose a young person too early. He cared so deeply about this place and it meant so much to him to be a part of this team. We are grieving today over the loss of a teammate and a brother, but Ben will not be forgotten.
