Anne Taylor is a criminal defense attorney and the Chief Public Defender in Kootenai County, Idaho. She was hired as the Kootenai County public defender in June 2017. She took over from John Adams, who retired in March after nearly 21 years as the chief public defender.

“As I begin this journey, I am excited to do my very best,” she said. “And, most of all, I have gratitude for all of the members of the Public Defender’s Office. I am grateful to be welcomed by an outstanding office and I am looking forward to us standing together to advocate for citizens in Kootenai County.”

Before being hired as the Kootenai County public defender, Taylor specialized in criminal defense in private practice for the firm of Palmer, George and Taylor since 2012.

Prior to her private practice, she worked for the Kootenai County Public Defender’s Office from 2004 to 2012. During that period she thought it would be great to lead that department.

“I always thought that was the job I’d want some day,” she told The Press.

“It’s such necessary work,” Taylor said, referring to what interested her in the public defender position. “It’s important to make sure Constitutional rights apply to everybody. You help people who are facing horrible times. I love the work.”

An Idaho native, Anne Taylor graduated from Idaho State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration. She earned her doctorate degree from the University of Idaho in 1998.

She went on to practice law at the federal, state and local levels. Taylor also worked for five years in the Kootenai County Prosecutor’s Office.

Taylor serves on the board of the Idaho Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and is death penalty certified in Idaho .

Kootenai County chief public defender Anne Taylor is the defense lawyer for Idaho murder suspect Bryan Kohberger.

According to the New York Post, a woman resembling Taylor was spotted on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, with a group of investigators at King Road in Moscow, the site of the brutal murders on Nov. 13.

The group declined to identify themselves to the media and reportedly spent about five hours around the house before leaving, reported the outlet.

Kohberger was arrested in his hometown of Albrightsville, Pa., nearly seven weeks after University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were stabbed to death in their sleep in their off-campus house in Moscow.

He was arrested at his parents’ home after driving over 2,500 miles cross-country from his home in Pullman, Wash., with his father to his family’s home in Pennsylvania ahead of the holidays.
