Timothy J. Cruz, also known as Tim Cruz, is the district attorney for Plymouth County. He has served as Plymouth County District Attorney since November 2001. In November 2001, he was appointed District Attorney by Governor Jane Swift to succeed former District Attorney Michael Sullivan, who became the United States Attorney in the fall of 2001. Cruz was elected District Attorney in 2002 and was re-elected to full four-year terms in November 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022.

District Attorney Cruz is currently president of the Massachusetts District Attorneys’ Association (MDAA). At their monthly meeting held on November 17, 2022, members of the MDAA unanimously voted in DA Cruz as president. He succeeded Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III, who was MDAA’s past president. DA Cruz is the most senior member of MDAA having been a member since 2001, and has served as its president three times before, in 2005, in 2010, and in 2018.

MDAA is an independent state agency whose mission is to support the 11 elected Massachusetts District Attorneys and their staff, including approximately 785 prosecutors and 260 victim witness advocates.

Currently, DA Cruz serves on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for the National District Attorneys Association. DA Cruz additionally serves as a co-chair on the Prevention Subcommittee of the Governor’s Council to Address Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, an appointment made by Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker.

He is past vice-president of the National District Attorneys Association, where he serves on the NDAA Opioid Working Group. District Attorney Cruz has served as a member of the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance; Department of Corrections Advisory Council; Governor’s Council on Capital Punishment; and the Forensic Technology Subcommittee of the Governor’s Commission on Criminal Justice Innovation.

District Attorney Cruz previously worked in private practice, and as an Assistant District Attorney in Plymouth County. He is a graduate of Boston College and Suffolk University Law School. District Attorney Cruz is admitted to both the Massachusetts and United States District Court bars, as well as the United States Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States.
