Asieh Namdar is an Iranian American journalist and television presenter. She is currently an anchor for CGTN AMERICA in Washington DC. Having joined CNN in 1989 as a video journalist, she has held many positions, including producing her own segment, reporting on the Middle East conflict, the civil war in Northern Uganda, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and interviewing world leaders such as the late Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan’s former Prime Minister. In 2004, she traveled to Iran to report on the Bam earthquake. She also anchored, wrote, and produced the daily CNN’s Headline News segment “The Global Minute”. She was also a contributor to CNN.com.
She has written and reported on many international stories, including the trade dispute between China and the US, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the tsunami disaster in Asia, the disputed 2009 election and protests in Iran, as well as the Iran nuclear agreement. She has interviewed several newsmakers including Nobel Peace-Prize Laureate Shirin Ebadi, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Jordan’s Queen Rania, and best-selling author Azar Nafisi. She is one of the few Iranian-American women who has conducted extensive one-on-one interviews with Iran’s foreign minister, Javad Zarif, on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.
In 2004, she traveled to the ancient city of Bam in Iran for a humanitarian mission after a deadly earthquake. It was her first and last trip to her native Iran since she left at the age of 12. She has also moderated various panels and served as master of ceremony for high profile events in the US, Canada, Morocco, and Belgium. She has been recognized for her work by numerous Iranian-American organizations.
She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in communications. She is fluent in Persian.
