Anna McGurn is a 57-year-old social care facilitator from Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. She is competing in the Great Pottery Throw Down. The Fermanagh native said it was “nerve-wracking and exciting” walking on to the filming set of the Great Pottery Throw Down.

“It was nerve-wracking and exciting, we were all in the same boat and that helped give us a sense of solidarity,” she said. “It was great fun, it was a huge learning curve and my first instinct was fear but after you start and get absorbed in what you are doing that goes and you realise it’s challenging in a good way. It felt like an adventure that you didn’t know the ending so the best thing to do was embrace it in all its madness.”

She is a social care facilitator and works with adults with learning difficulties. She first took to the pottery wheel at the age of 54, having come from a farming background, as well as living and working in Africa for years.

“I started pottery at about 54 years of age, my interest was started where I work when it was decided to open a ceramic workshop for adults with learning disabilities, though not directly involved I was fascinated,” she told BelfastLive.

“I spoke about it quite a lot to my partner Skip and I came home one Friday to find he had made space in his shed and equipped it with a treadle wheel. I work on my own in a corner of a shed, I have never had a studio experience before GPTD and I am self taught, so I was a very solitary potter prior to this.”
