Angus Ashworth Biography – Angus Ashworth Wiki

Angus Ashworth is an antiques dealer, auctioneer, former army officer and expert on the BBC’s Antiques Road Trip. He is the owner of Ryedale Auctioneers based in Kirby Moorside, North Yorkshire. He has presented the BBC TV series Cash in the Attic, The Yorkshire Auction House and Celebrity Yorkshire Auction House on the Really channel, as well as STV’s Clear Out, Cash In.

Ashworth fell in love with antiques from an early age. “My parents are into antiques and my uncle was in the antiques business,” he told The Herald Scotland. “It was always around me. As a young lad, 12, 13 and 14, I used to go to auctions and collected militaria – that was my interest.

“That came from watching Sharpe and reading the Bernard Cornwell series of books when I was a youngster. I started collecting powder flasks – before you had bullets, there was this little flask that held the powder.”

Auctioneer

Ashworth began his career with David Duggleby Auctioneers when, on his 16th birthday, after leaving Ryedale School, he moved into a bedsit in Scarborough to start learning his trade.

After working his way up at Duggleby’s, he joined the family engineering and deep sea fishing business, as well as the Territorial Army, which led to tours of Afghanistan and Iraq. He was an infantry solder and as he puts it “was at the sharp end”.

But his love of auctions and the whole process remained, which prompted his father to suggest he get back into it professionally. With the continued support of his wife Gemma, with whom he has been for 19 years, he launched Ryedale Auctioneers in 2010.

Ashworth’s main area and specialism is military memorabilia. It all came from reading the Sharpe books and watching Sharpe (Bean played the Richard Sharpe, a British soldier in the Napoleonic Wars, in the TV adaption), which preceded his earlier career in the military.

Since then, his expertise got him work with Cash in the Attic online – an off-shoot of the popular BBC television series – and his charisma caught the eye of television producers, resulting in appearances on shows such as the Antiques Road Trip. The first series of his own show, The Yorkshire Auction House, aired in March 2021. In 2023, he returned with Celebrity Yorkshire Auction House is on the Really channel.
