Andrew Thorburn is an Australian-New Zealand businessman. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Essendon Football Club. Thorburn is a former CEO of Bank of NZ (BNZ), and also of National Australia Bank (NAB).

Thorburn was chief executive of NAB from 2014 until February 2019. He resigned from NAB after the release of the final report of the Royal Commission into the banking and superannuation industry, which followed criticisms of Thorburn and then exiting NAB chairman Ken Henry from commissioner Kenneth Hayne.

Thorburn is currently the chairman of the Sentient Impact Group, an investment fund that focuses on clean energy, land and water and is a senior adviser to the Boston Consulting Group.

Thorburn is also the chair of City on a Hill church, which describes itself as a movement of men and women, gathered across eight churches in five cities, united around the mission “to know Jesus and make Jesus known”.

Thorburn began his managerial career as a regional head of ASB Bank, which is owned by Commonwealth Bank of Australia, in Auckland in 1986. After taking over the bank’s retail segment, he moved to Sydney as the head of CBA’s marketing communications division. Thorburn was also CBA’s state manager for WA.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Auckland, an MBA from the University of Durham in the U.K. and is a Senior Fellow of FINSIA.
