Andile Mngxitama is a South African politician and the president of Black First Land First (BLF).
In 2009, Mngxitama published the first four essays in the New Frank Talk series, a journal of critical essays in which the writer uses his broad political knowledge, razor-sharp wit and powerful debate skills to examine the black condition. His popular essay Blacks Can’t be Racist, the third to be published in the series, has been prescribed by universities together with Why Biko Wouldn’t Vote. In 2010, Mngxitama published the fifth issue of the New Frank Talk series titled White Revolutionaries as Missionaries?
Mngxitama served as an EFF member of parliament after the party won 25 seats in the 2014 general election. After EFF’s inaugural elective conference in December 2014, Mngxitama became unhappy with the leadership of EFF. He accused EFF leadership, and in particular its founder Julius Malema, of having the “same tendencies as the ANC”. These accusations caused a rift in the EFF, a rift that widened in February 2015 when the two sides “came to blows” following accusations that Malema had made a deal with the ANC to help get Mngxitama and his sympathisers out of parliament. Mngxitama and two of his comrades, Mpho Ramakatsa and Khanyisile Litchfield-Tshabalala, were expelled in April.
Mngxitama co-edited Biko Lives! Contesting the Legacies of Steve Biko, a collection of essays on the philosophy and writings of Black Consciousness leader, Steve Biko. Fools of Melville is Mngxitama’s first work of fiction. He is also a columnist for the Sowetan and City Press newspapers.
