Penny Sparrow Biography – Penny Sparrow Wiki
Penny Sparrow was the KwaZulu-Natal south coast woman who rose to infamy with her racist post on social media.
Penny Sparrow Facebook Post
On New Year’s Eve 2016, Sparrow in a virulent Facebook post likened black beachgoers to monkeys. Penny Sparrow’s Facebook post stated:
“These monkeys that are allowed to be released on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s day on to public beaches, towns, etc obviously no education what so ever so to allow them loose is inviting huge dirt and troubles and discomfort to others. I’m sorry to say that I was amongst the revelers and all I saw were black on black skins what a shame, I do know some wonderful and thoughtful black people. This lot of monkeys just don’t want to even try. But they can voice opinions and get their way. From now on, I shall address the blacks of South Africa as monkeys as I see the cute wild monkeys do the same, pick and drop litter.”
The rant set in motion a viral backlash‚ which has seen her hauled to court by the ANC for hate speech as well as criminal charges. The Equality Court in 2018 slapped Sparrow with a R150,000 fine‚ which she had to pay after two months.
But after the ANC established that she was ostensibly homeless and surviving on a R1‚400 per month government pension‚ it applied to the court to allow her to pay the fine over two years.
Sparrow pleaded guilty to charges of crimen injuria‚ paying a R5‚000 penalty to avoid a jail term.
Penny Sparrow Apology
As part of her plea agreement, Sparrow read out an apology that a number of complainants, including the ANC, had approved. In one of her final public statements, Sparrow emotionally read her apology.
In it, she said: “It is difficult to put into words the regret I feel. I will from now on strive to be a better citizen, respecting others, working towards making our country a better place to live in. A place we can be accepting of each other. A place we can all call home.
“I accept that in comparing black people to monkeys in my Facebook post earlier this year I have impaired the dignity of African people. Please accept my heartfelt apology.”

Penny Sparrow’s daughter is Charmaine Cowie. She runs a nursery and garden service business. “People will stop me in the street because I am Penny Sparrow’s daughter‚ it still happens. They tell me what my mother did was disgusting. She has become Scottburgh’s most infamous citizen‚” Cowie said.
She said her mother had been punished to an extent that is hard to understand.
