Allan Gray Bio – Allan Gray Wiki
Allan Gray full name Allan William Buchanan Gray, was a South African businessman and philanthropist. He was the founder of Allan Gray Investment Management, and the non-profit Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, and the Allan and Gill Gray Charitable Trust.
After completing high school at Selborne College, he studied accounting at Rhodes University and went on to earn an MBA at Harvard Business School in 1965.
After Harvard, Gray started working for the asset management firm Fidelity Management and Research in Boston, where he stayed for eight years. He returned to South Africa in 1973 to found what would become Allan Gray Investment Management in Cape Town.
“In starting Allan Gray Investment Counsel in 1973, I was convinced that my passion for investing could be deployed to demonstrably enhance clients’ savings and wealth and provide them with good value for their money,” Gray said in a letter to clients in 2015. “This was our raisond’être, our driving sense of purpose. We focused on earning and retaining the trust and confidence of our clients, leaving them to determine through their actions whether the firm would grow and prosper—or languish and fail. Our financial services were to be bought and not sold.”
He then set up Orbis Investment Management in 1989 in London to focus on investing in international markets. Two years later the company relocated its headquarters to Bermuda.
Gray established the Allan Gray Foundation in 2007 with a US$130 million endowment to fund bursaries and scholarships for talented South African high school students. In 1979 he founded the Allan and Gill Gray Charitable Trust. In 2016 Allan donated his entire stake in his company to the Allan and Gill Gray Charitable Trust so that dividends from his share in both the South African company and the Orbis Group can be exclusively used for philanthropic purposes.
“I am enormously grateful to my wife Gill, my soul mate and partner for over 50 years; our three children, Trevor, Jennifer and William, whose enthusiastic participation and selflessness has made the Foundation possible; and their descendants, who will be indispensable to the Foundation’s long-term success,” Gray said in a statement at the time.
