His mother died in October 2018. He said in a Facebook post the day after his mother died: “Today has been the most difficult day of my life. My mom passed away last night and my heart has never felt heavier. But I am finding the strength to write this in her honor.
“My mom, Guadalupe ‘Lupe’ Padilla was born in Chihuahua, Mexico and like many immigrants, she came to the United States in pursuit of the American Dream. She worked for forty years as a housekeeper and, together with my dad Santos, dedicated herself every day to giving my sister Julie, my brother Ackley, and I her tremendous love and discipline. She also instilled in us the values of getting a good education and service to others. My mom was completely selfless and always found ways to serve and help others even when, sometimes especially when, times were tough for our family. Because of her example, my sister, my brother, and I are all public servants.
“I can’t thank her enough for being a wonderful mom and for her unconditional love of Angela and our boys. While Roman, Alex, and Diego are still young, they will join me in rembering her for so much: her playful sense of humor, her unwavering faith, her incredible cooking, her deep love of the Tarahumara people, her resourcefulness, her creativity, and her love of music — especially trio music, Mexican ballads, and a little Stevie Wonder for good measure (there’s nothing like hearing her sing ‘I Just Called to Say I Love You’ on my answering machine or voicemail!)
“And finally, I take special pride in knowing that she will always be lovingly referred to as “Mama Padilla” to the thousands of friends, neighbors, and campaign volunteers who met her over the years.
“I miss her tremendously, but take comfort in knowing that she passed away in peace, experienced no pain, and was surrounded by our entire family with her favorite song “El Corrido de Chihuahua” playing in the background. May she Rest In Peace.”
