Wynne Evans is a broadcaster, presenter, and professionally trained opera singer. He is best known for his role as Gio Compario – the opera singer with the moustache – in the adverts for Go Compare, a long-running insurance comparison site.
Throughout his 25-year operatic career, Wynne has been a principal at most of the major opera houses around the world, from The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden to Paris Opera De Lyon, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
He sang the role of PIANGI in the 25-year anniversary performance of The Phantom of the Opera, which was broadcast live from the Royal Albert Hall to cinemas worldwide. Wynne has also given over 200 performances at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He has had two number one classical music albums.
Wynne was crowned the Celebrity MasterChef Champion 2023. He has also competed against his long-term friend, Joanna Page, searching for antiques on Celebrity Antiques Road Trip, and proved that he’s not totally ‘pointless’ as contestant on Pointless. He has also been presenting on BBC Radio 2.

I’m not entirely sure how I’ll get along, if all else fails I’ll just have to learn the art of distraction. What I do know is I will give it my all and aim to make Wales proud. I’m definitely going to try and combine my love of Opera into one of my routines. At his peak he weighed 24 stone and has now lost what he describes as ‘a bit of timber’.
Wynne attributed his incredible seven stone weight loss down to a calorie-controlled diet, long walks with his partner Liz Brooks and the physical demands of training for Strictly. He told the Mail: “I’m more body confident. Looking in the mirror all day is a bit odd for me, because the mirror is something I always try to avoid.
“But I’m really enjoying it. I haven’t seen my neck in a long time. I feel like a giraffe.”

He wrote in the caption: “Here I am exactly one year ago at the start of my weight loss journey and today. No massive secret just tried to eat less than 2000 calories, I walked 10,000 steps and drank 3 litres of water. He said: “Like Gary Lineker, I work for the BBC and appear in a long-running advertising campaign. But sadly, he earns somewhat more than me.”
Wynne admitted that the Go Compare moustache cost £1,000 per piece. He told the press: “The moustaches I wear for the TV adverts cost £1,000 each to make but are vital to my character.
“I really panicked when I thought one had been lost. My daughter had taken it to school for a “show and tell” lesson. It came back in a packet of cheese and onion crisps.”
