Melissa Coates was a Canadian professional wrestler, bodybuilder, fitness model, and actress. At the height of her bodybuilding career in the ’90s, she earned various accolades. In 1996, she placed 9th overall in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness Ms. Olympia and placed 11th the following year. In 1994, she placed 1st in the Canadian Championships for Middle Weight bodybuilding, according to Generation Iron Fitness Network.
After retiring from bodybuilding, Coates trained with Hall of Fame pro wrestler, Killer Kowalski. She started her professional wrestling career in 2002 and joined the WWE roster in 2005. She performed as “The Super Genie” and managed legendary pro wrestler, Sabu.

A friend of Coates confirmed her death in a Facebook post, writing: “This may be the hardest post I have ever made… Just got word from Terry ‘Sabu’ Brunk that Super Genie Melissa Coates has passed away this afternoon.. I also have spoken to her brother, JR Coates and niece, Cassi. They told me to post this sad news. Sabu will not be taking calls and please respect their privacy at this time. Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.”
The Cauliflower Alley Club – a non-profit organisation that looks after retired pro wrestlers – also confirmed the tragic news. “Everyone here at the CAC is deeply saddened to hear the news that Super Genie Melissa Coates has passed away,” the Cauliflower Alley Club wrote. “We send out our sincerest condolences to her family, friends and fans. May they find comfort in the memories left behind during this most difficult time. R.I.P. Melissa.”

Coates struggled with a number of health issues. On October 13, 2020, she was admitted to University Medical Center Las Vegas to assess recent onset of excruciating pain in her left leg. The doctors discovered that the arteries supplying blood to her left lower leg were completely obstructed by blood clots. Over the next few days several procedures were performed in an attempt to remove the clots and thus save her leg but these operations were unsuccessful. Ultimately Melissa and her doctors had to make the agonizing choice to perform a life-saving above knee amputation of her left leg.
